Current conditions

Stage 4 water restrictions and closure of concession lodging begin at noon on August 31 on the South Rim. Flash flooding has closed Phantom Ranch, the North Kaibab Trail, and the Colorado River.

[WATER] No potable water at Cottonwood and Manzanita

Potable water is unavailable at Cottonwood Campground and Manzanita Rest Area until further notice. Carry enough water or bring filtration and water treatment.

[NORTH] North Rim has limited services

Some North Rim areas reopened for the 2026 season, but services are limited and potable water is not available. Bring all food and water. Check the current North Rim status before driving there.

[WATER] Water is off below the rim

Water is off at Bright Angel Campground, the Delta Restrooms, and Boat Beach.

[WATER] Stage 4 water restrictions on South Rim

Stage 4 water restrictions begin at noon on August 31. Flash flooding damaged or destroyed approximately 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline. Bring drinking water from outside the South Rim system. Conserve water during your stay. South Rim campgrounds are dry camping only. Concession lodging is closed. Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited.

[FIRE] Walhalla Plateau permits paused

The park has temporarily paused permits for trips in the Walhalla Plateau area. This is due to the Cliff Spring Fire below the North Rim. There are currently no trail or area closures.

[SAFETY] Drones are prohibited

Do not fly drones in the park. Drones ground rescue flights. This delays emergency missions.

[CLOSED] Phantom Ranch, North Kaibab Trail, and Colorado River closed

Flash flooding has closed Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the North Kaibab Trail, Black Bridge, Silver Bridge, and the Colorado River to river traffic. Floodwaters destroyed nearly all footbridges over Bright Angel Creek. Do not enter these areas.

[BUS] Hermit Road shuttle

From Mar 1 through Nov 30, Hermit Road is closed to most private vehicles. Use the free red-route shuttle or walk or bike. Storms can suspend shuttle service.

[FUEL] No fuel in Grand Canyon Village

The nearest fuel to Grand Canyon Village is in Tusayan, 7 miles south. Desert View has the only South Rim fuel inside the park.

[HEAT] The canyon is hotter below the rim

Inner Canyon temperatures can exceed 109 F in the shade during midday hours. Carry more water than you expect to need. A rim hike can become a serious heat and dehydration problem below the rim.

Tusayan / South Entrance ↑

Do this: Buy fuel, food, water, and supplies in Tusayan before entering the South Rim.

  • Food, fuel: Yes in Tusayan.
  • Water: Yes in town.
  • Toilets: Yes in town and at the entrance.
  • Signal: Usually good in town; limited near the rim.

Tusayan is 7 miles south of Grand Canyon Village. Tusayan hotels are not affected by South Rim water restrictions.

Grand Canyon Village / Mather ↑

Do this: Bring drinking water from outside the South Rim system. Conserve water during your stay. South Rim campgrounds are dry camping only. Concession lodging is closed. Buy fuel in Tusayan before you enter.

  • Food: Yes. Maswik Dining is closed. Food service is consolidated at Bright Angel and El Tovar.
  • Water: Campgrounds are dry camping only. Concession lodging is closed.
  • Fuel: No. Use Tusayan or Desert View.
  • Signal: Limited. Calls or data can fail when the rim is busy.

Mather Point, the visitor center, and the main shuttle hub are near one another. You can take the morning Grand Canyon Railway train from Williams, Arizona, to the village depot as an alternative to driving. The train ride is 59.7 miles.

Desert View ↑

Do this: Bring drinking water from outside the South Rim system. Conserve water during your stay. South Rim campgrounds are dry camping only. Refuel here before driving east. Carry food and water.

  • Food: Seasonal market and snacks.
  • Water: Campgrounds are dry camping only. Carry all water.
  • Fuel: Yes. Pay-at-the-pump service operates 24 hours.
  • Signal: Limited or unreliable.

Desert View is 23 miles east of Grand Canyon Village and has the watchtower and east entrance.

Hermits Rest ↑

Do this: Bring food and water from the village. Use the shuttle and do not count on service here.

  • Food: Limited seasonal snacks and supplies.
  • Water: Seasonal at developed facilities.
  • Signal: Weak or unavailable.

Hermit Road has narrow sections and overlooks. Weather can stop the shuttle.

Bright Angel Trailhead ↑

Do this: Start early, carry water, and turn around before the heat or distance becomes unsafe.

  • Food: No. Buy food on the rim.
  • Water: Seasonal at designated trail stops. Carry water.
  • Toilets: Portable toilets only. Fresh-water toilets are closed to conserve water.
  • Signal: None below the rim.

The trail is much harder on the way back up. A rim-to-river day trip is not a short hike.

North Rim ↑

Do this: Confirm the 2026 opening and bring every meal and every liter of water you need.

  • Food: Limited seasonal food where services are open.
  • Water: No potable water in the 2026 limited-service area. Bring water.
  • Toilets: Yes where developed facilities are open.
  • Fuel: No dependable fuel. Fill up before Highway 67.
  • Signal: Weak or unavailable.

The North Rim is a separate trip from the South Rim. Scenic roads and facilities can close with little notice.

Drive times

Summer estimates without long stops. Traffic, wildlife, weather, and road work can cause delays.

Tusayan to Grand Canyon Village

Tusayan → 15 min → South Entrance → 10 min → Mather Point / Visitor Center

Entrance lines and parking can add much more time in summer. Park once and use the free South Rim shuttles.

Village to Desert View

Grand Canyon Village → 45–60 min → Desert View → 15 min → East Entrance

Desert View Drive is 23 miles. Fuel at Desert View before heading east.

Village to Hermits Rest

Grand Canyon Village → free red shuttle → Powell Point → 45–60 min → Hermits Rest

The shuttle stops at overlooks. Do not expect fuel or mobile service along the rim.

South Rim to North Rim

Grand Canyon Village → 4–5 hr → Cameron → 2 hr → North Rim

There is no road across the canyon. This is a long drive outside the park; check Highway 67 and North Rim status first.

Permits

Entrance pass

Every visitor needs an entrance pass. The pass does not guarantee parking, a shuttle seat, or an open road.

Backcountry hiking

You must obtain a permit from the Backcountry Information Center to camp anywhere in the park, other than in developed campgrounds on the North Rim or the South Rim.

Private river trips require a permit or a commercial trip reservation. River travel is not a casual add-on to a rim visit.

Reserve a campground before arriving when reservations are required. Do not sleep in a vehicle outside a campsite.
