Current conditions

Laurel Falls Trail, Greenbrier Road, and portions of Little River Road and Wear Cove Gap Road are closed due to rehabilitation, high water, and vehicle size restrictions. Check conditions before you travel because weather can cause sudden mountain road closures.

[X] Laurel Falls Trail closed

Laurel Falls Trail is closed for rehabilitation from the Fighting Creek Gap Road trailhead to the junction with Little Greenbrier and Cove Mountain trails.

[X] Greenbrier Road closed

Greenbrier Road is closed because of downed trees and high water.

[X] Metcalf Bottoms entrance closed

The Metcalf Bottoms entrance from Wears Valley is closed on August 27 for bridge repairs. Enter the park from Gatlinburg or Townsend. Line Springs Road is closed at the park boundary. The picnic area remains open.

[X] Little River Road closed

Little River Road is closed between Townsend Wye and Metcalf Bottoms until noon today. Use Wears Valley Road (US 321) between Townsend and Line Springs Road as a detour.

[!] Wear Cove Gap Road restriction

Do not drive motor homes, buses, or vans longer than 25 feet on Wear Cove Gap Road. Do not tow a trailer on this road. This restriction applies from the park boundary to the Metcalf Bottoms bridge.

[!] Bullhead Trail work

Bullhead Trail is closed Monday through Thursday for rehabilitation through Nov 19, 2026, except federal holidays. Check conditions before driving to the trailhead.

[ROAD] Weather can close roads

Newfound Gap Road and other mountain roads can close for snow, ice, rockfall, flooding, or crashes. Check conditions before leaving town.

[$] Parking fills early

Popular trailheads and Cades Cove can fill early. Do not park on road shoulders or block gates.

Gatlinburg / Sugarlands ↑

Do this: Buy food, fuel, water, and supplies in Gatlinburg before entering the park.

  • Food: Yes in Gatlinburg; limited at Sugarlands.
  • Water: Yes at the visitor center when open.
  • Toilets: Yes at Sugarlands Visitor Center.
  • Fuel: Yes in Gatlinburg; no in the park.
  • Signal: Usually available near Gatlinburg; weak in the park.

Sugarlands Visitor Center is about 2 miles south of Gatlinburg.

Cherokee / Oconaluftee ↑

Do this: Refuel and buy food in Cherokee before driving west into the park.

  • Food: Yes in Cherokee; limited at the visitor center.
  • Water: Yes at Oconaluftee Visitor Center when open.
  • Fuel: Yes in Cherokee; no in the park.
  • Signal: Usually available near Cherokee; weak or absent in the park.

Oconaluftee is the main south entrance and has a visitor center, restrooms, and the Mountain Farm Museum.

Cades Cove ↑

Do this: Bring food and water. Fill the tank before the one-way loop.

  • Food: Limited seasonal food and supplies at the campstore.
  • Water: Seasonal at developed facilities.
  • Toilets: Yes at developed stops.
  • Fuel: No. Buy fuel before entering the cove.
  • Signal: Weak or absent.

The loop is 11 miles and traffic can make the drive much longer than the distance suggests.

Newfound Gap ↑

Do this: Carry food, water, and warm layers. Do not depend on mobile service.

  • Water: No dependable drinking water.
  • Toilets: Yes when facilities are open.
  • Signal: Weak or unreliable.

At 5,046 ft, Newfound Gap can be cold, windy, or foggy when lower elevations are warm.

Clingmans Dome ↑

Do this: Bring food and water. Check the seasonal road status before driving here.

  • Water: No dependable drinking water.
  • Toilets: Seasonal vault toilets.
  • Signal: Weak or unreliable.

The observation tower is reached by a steep paved walk from the parking area.

Townsend / Townsend Wye ↑

Do this: Use Townsend for fuel, food, and supplies before Cades Cove or Tremont.

  • Food, fuel: Yes in Townsend.
  • Water: Yes at businesses; carry water in the park.
  • Toilets: Yes in town and at developed park stops.
  • Signal: Usually available in town; weak in the park.

Townsend is the useful west-side gateway for Cades Cove and Tremont.

Drive times

Summer estimates without long stops. Traffic, wildlife, weather, and road work can cause delays.

Gatlinburg to Cherokee

Sugarlands Visitor Center → 35 min → Newfound Gap → 35 min → Oconaluftee Visitor Center

Allow more time for wildlife, traffic, and mountain weather. The road can close without warning.

Gatlinburg to Cades Cove

Gatlinburg → 15 min → Townsend Wye → 45 min → Cades Cove

The road around the cove is one-way and can take several hours with stops.

Gatlinburg to Clingmans Dome

Gatlinburg → 35 min → Newfound Gap → 25 min → Clingmans Dome Road turn

Clingmans Dome Road is seasonal. Check its status before driving to the turn.

Cherokee to Cataloochee

Oconaluftee → 45 min → Cove Creek Road → 30 min → Cataloochee

The final road is narrow and winding. Carry food, water, and a paper map.

Permits

Entrance fee

The park has no entrance gate fee, but most vehicles must display a valid parking tag when parked for more than 15 minutes. Buy a tag before stopping at a trailhead.

Frontcountry campgrounds require reservations or payment as listed by the park. Backcountry camping requires a permit and site reservation.
