Timed entry permits are required during the summer, and high-elevation weather can change quickly above treeline with snow, wind, lightning, and thin air. Trail Ridge Road is open for the season, but timed entry reservations are required for the road from 9 am to 2 pm.

[HIGH] High-elevation weather

Weather can change quickly above treeline. Snow, wind, lightning, and thin air can make a short trail unsafe.

[ROAD] Trail Ridge Road is seasonal

Trail Ridge Road can close for snow, ice, wind, or construction. Check the recorded road status before driving across the park.

[PARK] Bear Lake parking fills

Bear Lake Road parking fills early. Use the shuttle when it runs, or choose a trailhead with space. Do not park on road shoulders.

Estes Park / Beaver Meadows ↑

Do this: Buy food, fuel, water, and supplies in Estes Park before entering the park.

  • Food: Yes in Estes Park.
  • Water: Yes in town and at developed park facilities.
  • Fuel: Yes in Estes Park; no dependable fuel in the park.
  • Signal: Usually good in town; weak in the park.

Beaver Meadows is the main east entrance and the route to the Bear Lake corridor.

Bear Lake Corridor ↑

Do this: Use the shuttle or arrive early. Carry food and water for every trail.

  • Food: No. Buy food in Estes Park.
  • Water: Seasonal at developed facilities.
  • Toilets: Yes at major trailheads.
  • Signal: Weak or unreliable.

The corridor includes Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, Glacier Gorge, and many popular trailheads.

Alpine Visitor Center ↑

Do this: Use the restroom, check weather, and carry layers before walking above treeline.

  • Food: Seasonal cafe and snacks when open.
  • Water: Yes when facilities are open; carry backup water.
  • Toilets: Yes when open.
  • Signal: Weak or unavailable.

At 11,796 ft, this is the highest visitor center in the National Park System.

Fall River Entrance ↑

Do this: Fill the tank and carry food before driving Trail Ridge Road.

  • Food: Nearby in Estes Park; limited seasonal snacks farther in.
  • Water: Seasonal at developed facilities.
  • Toilets: Yes at developed stops.
  • Fuel: No dependable fuel inside the park.
  • Signal: Limited or unreliable.

This is the east start of Trail Ridge Road. Road status can change after you enter.

Grand Lake / Kawuneeche ↑

Do this: Use Grand Lake for food, fuel, and supplies before exploring the west side.

  • Food: Yes in Grand Lake; limited at park facilities.
  • Water: Yes at visitor centers and developed facilities when open.
  • Fuel: Yes in Grand Lake; no dependable fuel in the park.
  • Signal: Usually available in town; weak in the valley.

The west entrance is quieter but still remote. Trail Ridge Road may be closed between sides.

Longs Peak Trailhead ↑

Do this: Arrive with food, water, and a full tank. Do not assume a parking space is available.

  • Water: No dependable drinking water.
  • Toilets: Yes at the trailhead.
  • Signal: Weak or unavailable.

This trailhead fills early and is the start of a long, high-risk route.

Drive times

Summer estimates without long stops. Traffic, wildlife, weather, and road work can cause delays.

Estes Park to Bear Lake

Estes Park → 10 min → Beaver Meadows Entrance → 20 min → Bear Lake Road / Park & Ride

Timed entry, entrance lines, and full lots can add time. The shuttle is the practical option during busy periods.

Estes Park to Alpine Visitor Center

Estes Park → 10 min → Fall River Entrance → 45–60 min → Alpine Visitor Center

The road climbs above treeline. Carry layers, food, water, and a plan for sudden closure.

Estes Park to Grand Lake

Estes Park → 2 hr → Trail Ridge Road → Grand Lake Entrance → 15 min → Grand Lake

This crossing is seasonal. Check both road status and weather before leaving Estes Park.

Grand Lake to Kawuneeche Valley

Grand Lake → 10 min → Kawuneeche Visitor Center → 25 min → Holzwarth Historic Site

Services are sparse on the west side. Fill the tank and buy food in Grand Lake.

Entrance pass

An entrance pass is required. It does not reserve a parking space or replace a timed entry permit.

During the summer timed-entry period, choose the correct permit for Bear Lake Road or the rest of the park. Arrive inside the listed window.

Wilderness camping

Overnight wilderness trips require a permit and designated campsite. Day hiking does not require a wilderness permit.

Reserve a campground before arriving when reservations are required. Sleeping in a vehicle outside a campsite is not allowed.
