Grand Lake entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park

The Grand Lake entrance is the west-side gate to Rocky Mountain National Park on U.S. Highway 34, about two miles north of the town of Grand Lake and one quarter mile north of Kawuneeche Visitor Center.

- Entrance location: The Grand Lake Entrance Station is on the west side of the park on U.S. Highway 34, about two miles north of Grand Lake and one quarter mile north of Kawuneeche Visitor Center.
- Timed Entry season: Timed Entry permits are required daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from May 22 through October 12, 2026. After October 12, 2026, no timed entry reservation is required at any entrance.
- Trail Ridge Road: When open to through travel, Trail Ridge Road (U.S. Highway 34) links Grand Lake and Estes Park. NPS closes it to through travel in winter, normally until Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting. Check the current NPS road status or call 970-586-1222 before planning a crossing.
- West-side winter access: Reach the Grand Lake entrance from Grand Lake or Granby via U.S. 34. When Trail Ridge Road is closed to through travel, the east side is not reachable by car from the west side through the park; Kawuneeche Valley and west-side trailheads remain accessible from the Grand Lake entrance when roads are open.
- Entrance pass: A valid park entrance fee or pass is required to enter any area of Rocky Mountain National Park 24 hours a day, including at the Grand Lake entrance. Entrance passes are sold at staffed entrance stations; the park is cashless at entrance stations.
Do you need a timed entry permit at the Grand Lake entrance?
Timed Entry runs daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from May 22 through Monday, October 12, 2026. After October 12, Rocky Mountain National Park does not require a timed entry reservation at any entrance, including Grand Lake. While the system is in effect, use the Timed Entry permit that excludes Bear Lake Road for a west-side visit if you enter between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road permit also covers the west side, but Bear Lake Road is on the east side near Beaver Meadows. You can enter before 9:00 a.m. or after 2:00 p.m. without a timed entry permit during the season. A separate valid park entrance pass or fee is required at all hours, year-round. Trail Ridge Road across the park is seasonal; when NPS closes it to through travel from late fall until late May, you cannot drive between Estes Park and Grand Lake through the park, but you can still enter at Grand Lake and explore the west side and Kawuneeche Valley on U.S. 34. Check NPS road status or call 970-586-1222 before you go, because snow, wind, and ice can close roads temporarily. In winter, prepare for changing weather and traction-law requirements, and do not rely on cell service at entrance stations.
