Timed entry reservations ended for 2026 (Bear Lake Road on Oct 18); an entrance pass is still required. Trail Ridge Road is open to through travel as of Oct 19 but can close at any time and usually closes for the season mid to late October. Old Fall River Road is closed to vehicles for the winter. High-elevation weather can change quickly with snow, wind, lightning, and thin air.
[FIRE] Stage 1 Fire Restrictions
Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect. Campfires are not allowed except in designated campfire rings in picnic areas and frontcountry campgrounds.
[CLOSED] Daily meadow closures for elk mating
The park closes meadow areas in Horseshoe Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow, and Holzwarth Meadow from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. daily. This closure is in effect from September 1 through October 31. Do not travel off established roads and trails in these areas during these hours.
[CLOSED] Old Fall River Road closures
Old Fall River Road is closed to vehicles for the season. Since Oct 17 it is open to bicycles, leashed pets, and pedestrians for the winter (bikes and pets on the road only). Do not park in front of the gate; vehicles that block access will be towed and cited.
[WARN] Ice and snow on high-elevation trails
Trails above 9,000 feet have ice and snow. Bring traction devices and hiking poles. Lower trails may be wet, muddy, or dry.
[HIGH] High-elevation weather
Weather can change quickly above treeline. Snow, wind, lightning, and thin air can make a short trail unsafe.
[CLOSED] Trail Ridge Road closed
Trail Ridge Road closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026. Snow, low visibility, and freezing temperatures are forecast. The road is closed between Many Parks Curve on the east side and Colorado River Trailhead on the west side. Call the status line at (970) 586-1222.
[PARK] Bear Lake parking fills
Bear Lake Road parking fills early. Regular shuttle service has ended for the year. Choose a trailhead with space. Do not park on road shoulders.

Grand Lake / Kawuneeche ↑

Do not travel off established roads and trails in the meadows from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. between September 1 and October 31. Food: No dependable food. Use Estes Park. · Water: Seasonal at developed facilities; carry water. · Toilets: Yes at developed facilities when open. · Fuel: No. Use Estes Park. · Signal: Weak or unreliable. This wildlife, campground, and trail area is inside the busy Bear Lake Road corridor.
- Wild Basin — Arrive with food, water, and a full tank. Check the narrow access road before taking a large vehicle. Food: No. Buy food before entering the park. · Water: No dependable treated water at trail destinations. · Toilets: Limited at developed trailheads. · Fuel: No. Fill up before entering the park. · Signal: Weak or unavailable. Wild Basin is a quieter southeast trail corridor with limited parking and services.

The road climbs above treeline. Carry layers, food, water, and a plan for sudden closure.
Estes Park to Grand Lake

This crossing is seasonal. Check both road status and weather before leaving Estes Park.
Grand Lake to Kawuneeche Valley
Grand Lake → 10 min → Kawuneeche Visitor Center → 25 min → Holzwarth Historic Site
Services are sparse on the west side. Fill the tank and buy food in Grand Lake.

Permits
Hours and entrance fees
Rocky Mountain National Park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, weather permitting. Timed entry ended for 2026 (Oct 12 for most of the park, Oct 18 for Bear Lake Road). On Tuesday, October 27, all park entrance fees are waived for Theodore Roosevelt's birthday. Camping and other use fees still apply. Regular fees: 7-day pass: $35 per vehicle, $30 per motorcycle, $20 per person. Rocky Mountain annual pass: $70. America the Beautiful pass: $80. Card only at entrance stations.
Timed entry (ended for 2026)
Timed entry ended for 2026: Oct 12 for most of the park and Oct 18 for Bear Lake Road. Enter without a timed reservation. An entrance pass is still required.
Wilderness camping
Overnight wilderness trips require a permit and designated campsite. Day hiking does not require a wilderness permit.
Campgrounds
Reserve a campground before arriving when reservations are required. Sleeping in a vehicle outside a campsite is not allowed.
Short hikes
Distances are one way unless marked as a loop. Check trail closures.
- Bear Lake / Bear Lake Loop: 0.6 mi loop. An easy lake walk with high demand for parking.
- Bear Lake / Alberta Falls: 1.2 mi round trip. A rocky trail near the shuttle corridor.
- Bear Lake / Emerald Lake: 3.6 mi round trip. The route climbs past two lakes. Snow and ice can persist.
- Grand Lake / Adams Falls: 0.9 mi round trip. A short walk near the west entrance.
- Alpine Visitor Center / Alpine Ridge Trail: 0.6 mi round trip. Short but steep at high elevation. Turn around for weather or breathing problems.
